A deep dive into the genealogy of Christ in Matthew 1

The genealogy of Jesus the Messiah in the Gospel of Matthew may seem like an odd way to start a gospel for a 21st Century reader. However, for a gospel to a 1stcentury messianic-Jew living in a decimated temple system under the brutal “Pax Romana” it is a deep reminder of belonging. The people that are Jesus' link to the covenant people are also humans responding to a God at work through uncertainty and unfamiliarity. They have names, differing character strengths, and stories that the Bible draws on to help us understand the person of Christ at work in Mathew’s Gospel. Join us at the Mount in person, socially distanced and masked, on Sunday evenings at 6pm to take a deep dive into the narrative-mosaic that Matthew includes in this seemingly simple list of names.
